Some of the stars from the cellar
2008 Louis Roederer ‘Cristal’
97 Richard Juhlin rating (95)
PN 60 PM 0 CH 40
TASTING NOTE ‘Not as extravagant as Dom Pérignon at launch, but with more undeveloped power and higher acidity. Slightly closed aroma and extreme purity. Magnificent weight under the surface. We are waiting for the exoticism and fruit richness as well as the white chocolate. It is significantly more more tied than Dom Pérignon and Comtes and so far a small step behind them. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if this tight and extract-packed grandeur steps past one day in the autumn. As a restrained breed horse that the driver chastise to that time is mature to go out in full gallop. More oak than before.’
2008 Pol Roger ‘Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill’
93 Richard Juhlin rating (90)
PN 75 PM 0 CH 25
TASTING NOTE ‘So beautiful and embracing from the start. Like many of the great champagnes from the leading champagne houses one has with the 08 successfully combined the vintages high potential with a rounded charm in a much better way than it did with the closely related 96. In the latter case, one had to wait a long time before the frugal acidity was integrated with the roasting and the lushious fruit. Here you will immediately lift to the dizzying heights of an orange-blossoming theme with nougat and milk chocolate-filled harmonies, nicely backing up. The seamless concentrated cocoa flavor is beautifully interwoven in fresh citrus elegance and freshly baked baguette tones. The abyss with the sophisticated base notes is safe and lurks under the surface in anticipation of all aromatic extracts melting together. It is time to find once again that Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is undoubtedly one of the most consistent and indispensable prestige campaigns of all categories.’
2008 Taittinger ‘Comtes de Champagne’
97 Richard Juhlin rating (95)
PN 0 PM 0 CH 100
TASTING NOTE ‘I can’t remember being more impressed with a newly released Comtes than this time. Possibly, my first meeting with the 76′ and the 05′ was largely identical experiences. That is not to say that I am sure that the future will give us one of the grandest Comtes vintages with this edition. Here is a part that is so seductively open and ripe that the warning signals must be switched on. Still, I hope and believe that, like so many previous editions, this is a wine that combines the two theoretically almost impossible qualities, direct charm with great storage. I will return after the next meeting with this delicious piece. That meeting was much more restrained with a classic acidic backbone and ageworthy structur.’
mv Krug ‘Grande Cuvée 170ème Edition’
96 Richard Juhlin rating (94)
PN 51 PM 11 CH 38
TASTING NOTE ‘A cuvée like Julie Cavil composed of 195 wines with a base from 2014 and 45% reserve wines from 11 vintages dominating 2013 down to a splash of buttery rounded 1998. The proportion of reserve wines is high because 2014 is a light and unobtrusive vintage that lacked some concentration even if the wines were subtly floral and elegant. A swirling stream of delicate little bubbles, vivid aromas and ecstatic equilibrium flows out of the glass like a perfect ballerina. One of the lighter editions, but so subtly beautiful that it forgives everything.’
