R.H. Coutier
★★★★
This model firm was founded in 1880. Coutier own 8,5 hectares in the village but sell a high 40 percent to the cooperative and other houses. Malolactic fermentation is used on half of the still wine. The father of the present owner was the man who first planted Chardonnay in Ambonnay, back in 1946. Coutier is now one of the best growers in the area. All their wines are pure and elegant in a “big house style”. The vintage wine is worth a journey to Ambonnay.
In the book ‘Champagne Hiking’ [published 2017] Richard went to Iceland and brought a Magnum 2008 R.H Coutier ‘Millésime‘ to Steinahillir.
