The first international exhibitions of food & drink books and sustainability reports were inaugurated September 3 at Karlskoga Museum in Alfred Nobel Björkborn, with a speech by Governor Maria Larsson, Chair pf the Alfred Nobel Björkborn Foundation.
After a tour of the manor, and the exhibitions, the inauguration ceremony ended with a champagne hiking in the birch tree path around the manor, for the officials group, led by world champagne expert Richard Juhlin.
To me, both Björn Borg, Zlatan, Abba, Ingemar Bergman, Carl Von Linné, Volvo and Ikea are more famous Swedish people and companies, but it is claimed by many that Sweden’s strongest brand is the Nobel and the Nobel Prize. I who try to keep up and can rabble all the capitals of the earth should then of course have been to the Nobel Museum Björkborn in Karlskoga. I had not, but now I have!
There are few bad things that do not bring good. One such thing is that the terrible Corona pandemic brought the good news that Edouard Cointreau got stuck in self-quarantine in Bergslagen. From there, with the help of Pelle Agorelius, he has created a new concept and a new award for the best sustainability report in the gourmet world. An award supported by Alfred Nobel’s reputation and both Karlskoga’s and Örebro County’s governing bodies. As the 25th anniversary of the Gourmand Awards could not be carried out as planned in the Louvre in Paris, the result was a permanent exhibition at Björkborn with the foremost cook and drink books of all time. It was with joy and a great deal of pride that I saw my ‘A Scent of Champagne’ and ‘Champagne Hiking’ lying at the table of honor. A little sad, however, that the people from SVT did not even want to interview me even though I was the only writer present and despite the fact that we at Champagne Club are co-organizers as they only wanted to show cookbooks !!!
It was really fascinating to walk around Alfred Nobel’s old house and take part in his fascinating life. Not least the menus served and the wine list with names like Heidsieck & Monopole and Perrier-Jouët impressed. It is a dizzying thought that Alfred served the same 19th century vintages that I have tasted at Perrier-Jouët more than a hundred years later.
I had previously promised the City Council that I would do a Champagne Hiking with them which the latter could offer as part of future tours of the property. Since I have not been there before, it is impossible to know exactly what would work best this day in the manor park.
True to my habit, I checked the weather before grabbing a 2017 Shaman from Marguet. During my drive the rain poured down and I was afraid that my little Hiking would freeze in, but when I parked my champagne car for ten minutes and opened the door, the rain moisture was certainly still in the air but the drops remained obediently in the clouds. Björkborn is a stone’s throw from both Bofors and a shooting range and together with the rain-saturated autumn scent in nature, a blatant bouquet of gunpowder smoke dominated. You know, of course, that this particular tone is common in reductive pinot-dominated cuvées. Luckily, it was just such a cuvée I took with me.
To SVT’s surprise and to the guests’ delight, we eased on the cork and had a regular Champagne Hiking where the meeting between place / moment / company and champagne was pretty much perfect. The organic champagne without dosage was dominated by a yellow autumn-influenced round and ripe fruit for yellow apples, plums, quinces and nectarines spiced with just a beautifully lightly roasted tone of gunpowder smoke in honor of the good Alfred Nobel.

Gourmand Awards goes to Sweden [swe]
För mig är både Björn Borg, Zlatan, Abba, Ingemar Bergman, Carl Von Linné, Volvo och Ikea mer berömda svenska personer och företag, men det hävdas av många att Sveriges starkaste varumärke är Nobel och Nobelpriset. Jag som försöker hänga med och kan rabbla jordens alla huvudstäder borde då förstås varit på Nobel Muséet Björkborn i Karlskoga. Det hade jag inte, men det har jag nu!
Det finns få onda saker som inte för något gott med sig. En sådan sinkadus är att den hemska Coronapandemin fört det goda med sig att Edouard Cointreau fastnat i självkarantän i Bergslagen. Därifrån har han med Pelle Agorelius hjälp skapat ett nytt koncept och ett nytt pris för bästa hållbarhetsrapport i gourmetvärlden. Ett pris understött av Alfreds Nobels renommé och såväl Karlskogas och Örebro läns styrande instanser. Eftersom 25-årsjubiléet av Gourmand Awards inte kunde genomföras som planerat i Louvren i Paris blev resultatet en permanent utställning på Björkborn med tidernas främsta kok- och dryckesböcker. Det var med glädje och en stor portion stolthet jag såg min ”A Scent of Champagne” och ”Champagne Hiking” ligga vid honnörsbordet. Lite trist dock att tjejerna från SVT inte ens ville intervjua mig trots att jag var enda närvarande författare och trots att vi på Champagne Club är medarrangörer då de bara ville visa kokböcker!!!
Det var verkligen fascinerande att vandra runt i Alfred Nobels gamla hus och ta del av hans fascinerande liv. Inte minst menyerna som serverades och vinlistan med namn som Heidsieck & Monopole och Perrier-Jouët imponerade. Det är en svindlande tanke att Alfred serverade samma 1800-talsårgångar som jag har provat hos Perrier-Jouët mer än hundra år senare.
Jag hade sedan tidigare lovat kommunfullmäktige att jag skulle göra en Champagne Hiking med dem som de senare skulle kunna erbjuda som inslag i framtida rundvandringar på egendomen. Eftersom jag inte tidigare varit där är det ju omöjligt att exakt veta vad som skulle fungera bäst just denna dag i herrgårdsparken.
Min vana trogen kollade jag vädret innan jag grabbade tag i en 2017 Shaman från Marguet. Under min bilresa öste regnet ned och jag var rädd att min lilla Hiking skulle frysa inne, men när jag en minut i tio parkerade min champagnebil och öppnade dörren fanns förvisso regnfukten kvar i luften men dropparna stannade lydigt kvar i molnen. Björkborn ligger ett stenkast från både Bofors och en skjutbana och tillsammans med den regnmättade förhöstdoften i naturen dominerade en flagrant bouquet av krutrök. Ni vet förstås att just denna ton är vanligt förekommande i reduktiva pinotdominerade cuvéer. Som tur är var det just en sådan cuvée jag tagit med mig.
Till SVTs förvåning och till gästernas glädje lättade vi på korken och körde en regelrätt Champagne Hiking där mötet mellan plats / stund / sällskap och champagne blev i stort sett perfekt. Den ekologiska champagnen utan dosage dominerades av en gul höstpräglad rund och mogen frukt åt gula äpplen, plommon, kvitten och nektariner kryddad med just en vackert lätt rostad ton av krutrök till den gode Alfred Nobels ära.
