On October 17, 2011, it is exactly 50 years since Madame Lily Bollinger in an interview with the London Daily Mail made the statement that has become one of the wine world’s most quoted – more precisely, it is her answer to the question when she drinks Champagne:
‘ drink my Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it when I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.‘
